With global cybercrime costs potentially reaching £5 trillion by 2021, the financial services industry remains the main target for cyber security criminals all over the world and especially in the UK, the leading international financial centre. Figures from the Financial Conduct Authority show that reported data hacking attacks against financial services companies quadrupled in 2017. The National Cyber Security Centre recorded over 1,100 reported attacks, with 590 regarded as significant last year. Thirty of these incidents required action by government bodies, a large number of which were targeted at financial sector organisations.

Against this background, we are delighted to let you know that the 5th edition of City & Financial Global’s Financial Services Cyber Security Summit, a premier event of its kind, will take place in London on 13th September 2018.

Over the last four years, the City authorities have regularly supported this event. This year’s conference will be opened by Lyndon Nelson, Deputy CEO & Executive Director, Regulatory Operations and Supervisory Risk Specialists, Prudential Regulation Authority. His keynote speech, “Setting the right expectations for operational resilience”, will focus on the joint discussion paper on this topic that has just been published by the Bank of England, PRA and FCA.

This paper will set out the supervisory authorities’ objectives for operational resilience; the potential for additional policy making; the potential for revising existing policy; and the supervisory authorities’ views on clarifying the responsibilities of firms and FMIs’ boards and senior management. These standards, which are the PRA’s top priority, will set out the regulator’s expectations for the operational resilience that it expects of financial institutions and how it will make sure that they are delivered.

According to our Keynote, Simon Lindsay, Director General, The Panel on Takeovers and Mergers:

"UK takeover activity in 2018 has continued at a high level, with a significant proportion of large and cross border bids. More takeover activity will raise more interesting questions of interpretation and application of the rules of the City Code on Takeovers and Mergers (“the Code”).

The principles-based philosophy which underpins the Code enables the Takeover Panel, this year celebrating its 50th anniversary, to deal rapidly with new situations and to give guidance on a real-time basis to the parties involved in takeovers and other transactions involving corporate control".

With this in mind, City & Financial Global invites you to join us for the 38th iteration of “The City Code on Takeovers and Mergers" conference, scheduled to take place on the 27th September at the Royal Garden Hotel in London.

This forum has the tradition of attracting senior-level M&A executives, compliance officers, in-house and law firm counsel to discuss topical and imperative subjects such as:

  • The Takeover Panel: Examining its Role and the Outlook for the M&A Industry
  • The Approach, The Announcements and Obtaining Independent Advice
  • Share Dealings: Restrictions, Consequences and Disclosure
  • Conditions, Conduct and Information Requirements on an Offer
  • Addressing Hostile and Contested Takeovers

Global trade reached its highest level in the 21st century. This means that people are trading in other jurisdictions and therefore unlawful behaviour in one jurisdiction may affect classes of people living in other jurisdictions.

Law makers around the world have not yet caught up with the dynamic changes in global trade and no unified set of rules has been introduced to allow people to buy goods, use services or invest money in other jurisdictions. Class action and collective redress have been treated as national matters.

Against this background, a group of academic experts from universities from across the world, including University of California Hastings, University of Texas, University of San Francisco, Konstantz University, European University Institute, City University of Hong Kong, Brunel University, University of Paris Sud, University of Girona, University of Rio Grande do Sul, University of Lisbon, and Tilburg University, have joined forces to organise an international conference with some of the global leading practitioners and legal experts to discuss international developments in group, collective and class actions.

The conference will deal with global developments and international co-operation in class actions, as well as the use of technical devices and statistics. It will also cover different areas of law supported by class actions, e.g., human rights, consumer law, competition, banking, insurance, etc.

The conference will take place at the University of Haifa Israel, on the 28th and 29th of March 2019 and it is designed for judges, lawyers in practice, economic experts, academics, funders, claims organisers, members of regulatory bodies and associations which have an interest in collective redress.
